CHAPTER 8
COMMERCE
May 2017
Jim thought he should start going to church. So he called the Lutheran church near him. He felt good about his decision and talked to Pastor Rutkowsky. Jim asked if he could speak to him face-to-face. The reverend said he could talk after the Sunday Mass at eleven oâclock. He often talked to members of his flock then.
A few minutes after he called the church on Thursday afternoon, his cell rang.
âHello?â Jim said.
âHi, I am looking for a guy named Jim Neilson. My name is Nancy Morgan. I am a forensic pathologist in Minneapolis.â
It took a few seconds for Jim to react.
âHello?â Nancy said.
âIâm Jim,â he said. âWhy are you calling me?â
âI would like to talk about the death of Allicia Miller. You were her boyfriend, yes?â
âYes, I was,â Jim responded.
âJim, look,â Nancy said. âI am a Christian. I didnât think it would be good for you to get information about the death of your loved one in the mail. I will be blunt. When she died, she was pregnant.â
Jimâs hands started shaking. He was enraged.
Why canât I let her go? She is never coming back. Live your life without her. But he knew he couldnât. She was the one. She was there at the right time. She was perfect. She would have been the mother of his children.
âThank you, Nancy,â Jim said. âTelling me was very Christian of you. Finding that information out in the mail would have been ⦠soul less.â
âTake care,â Nancy said and then hung up.
Jim knew that the man who stole Allicia from him had to pay ⦠with his life.
He got down on his knees and closed his eyes. God tells me to do nothing, but I canât. I wonât let this murderer go unpunished. I canât! Man has to right the wrongs. Why do we have prisons and the death penalty if we donât punish people? I believe in God and Jesus, but my revenge will be my sin.
Jim got to church at ten forty-five and found a nice seat. Only a minute or two passed before the band started playing. The members all stood up and clapped their hands and sang along.
Jim had gone to church as a child with his mom and dad, but when he first started college, he stopped going. Now the pastor spent twenty minutes reading pages from the Bible to members, and then the pastor talked about some of his own memories from his teenage years. Jim would look around every now and again, searching for Damien. Jim wanted to all the information he could get about Clearance Jones. He also told Damien he was starting to go to church more. Damien asked him what church he was attending, and when Jim told him, he said, âI know where that one is at. I will see you at eleven.â Then he hung up.
Damienâs a little weird, he thought. But I guess I went to church, and Iâm meeting a guy who will give me information about a man I am going to kill.
